VENUS will provide academia, industry and government laboratories with the opportunity to advance research in energy materials and processes, materials science, additive manufacturing, mechanical and physical behavior, geosciences and petroleum applications, transportation research, building technologies, plant physiology, biology, archeology, and a range of other areas.
As its name indicates, VENUS is designed to be as versatile as possible to encompass the largest range of applications, while being fully optimized to benefit from the unique capabilities of SNS.
The range of cold to epithermal neutrons at SNS will give users of VENUS access to novel imaging methods, as well as to significantly improved existing methods. The time-of-flight TOF neutrons provided at SNS will offer easy and cost-efficient access to energy-selective imaging, hence making use of neutron scattering Bragg features for improved contrast and identification of phases in an absorption image.
The high peak flux of SNS is useful for stroboscopic imaging of repetitive or cyclic motions and is synchronized to a selected neutron energy range for enhanced image contrast. VENUS will also provide simultaneous x-ray imaging capabilities, as a complementary imaging modality. The energy dependence is important because many samples have crystalline components where Bragg scattering can give significant energy-dependent, material-specific variations in attenuation.

For in-house power generation systems which are now rising in demand as part of disaster-time risk management, we utilize our abundant technical skill and know-how for tasks such as installing package boilers. The knowledge obtained is then used for design of full-scale production systems and commercial products, as well as for identification of further research objectives and support of investment decisions. Other non-technical purposes include gaining public support for new technologies and questioning government regulations. Also, as pilot plants are intended for learning, they typically are more flexible, possibly at the expense of economy. Some pilot plants are built in laboratories using stock lab equipment, while others require substantial engineering efforts, cost millions of dollars, and are custom-assembled and fabricated from process equipment, instrumentation and piping. They can also be used to train personnel for a full-scale plant. Pilot plants tend to be smaller compared to demonstration plants. A word similar to pilot plant is pilot line.
