A quilt is a type of blanket made of three layers: a top piece of cloth , a layer of insulating material often called batting , and a bottom piece of cloth for backing. The layers are joined together either by sewing or by tying the layers together with pieces of yarn , thread , or ribbon. The top layer of the quilt can be made from many pieces of cloth sewn together in patterns, known as patchwork. Other patterns can be made by running lines of stitching through the three layers.

When experts talk or write about a subject you want to learn and understand fully, it can be quite frustrating when you come across words that you seem to get on the tip of your tongue but not quite getting a hold of. This is the most common of all embellishments done on a quilt — cutting out fabric pieces and attaching them to a foundation fabric in the shape of a design. The sides of the pieces are turned under and top stitched or finished with satin stitches or hand stitched blanket stitches. Read More on hand applique and machine applique. This series investigates the manipulation of the deconstructed silk screening process to create strong forms and interacting, unexpected color. The images recall experiences and memories of visible human-made and natural features, as well as people in the urban fabric of Philadelphia. Moving from drawing with a rotary cutter for piecing, to the more directness of painting with a brush, my love of large shapes took on more biomorphic form. Individually made units of abstracted shapes became more animated as I combined them to suggest new abstracted figure-like forms, gestures, and emotions. Through shape and color, this series of nearly 30 large pieces explores the often ambiguous interactions between people and place. In some pieces, land and people -- or figure and ground -- are clearly one or the other. In other pieces, figure and ground ambiguously shift back and forth with figures standing alone or together in groups. The imagery of this work abstracts live model drawing I had been doing during this time. I remain particularly interested in the body as it really is: whatever shape, size, and age each may be with its own set of self-loved, and at times, self-loathed parts. This series of shapes breaks loose from the constraining process dictated by the screen and its imprint by employing a chunky car washing mitt to draw on and then paint the fabric. The imprecise visceral process allowed me to further explore gesture.

If that happens to you, find a multicolored fabric you love and let it inspire the fabrics you choose for quilt blocks. You love the colors in the fabric, right? So you will probably be just as happy with quilt blocks that are made from the same colors. The inspiration fabric needn't be used in the quilt blocks, and whether or not to use it in the final quilt layout is up to you. If you do want to include the fabric in the quilt, try using it in a border, the backing, or in the quilt's binding. Use the fabric in any way you wish. Pinwheel quilt blocks are simple to make, and an easy project to test this method. The starting point for dark and light is up to you, but when selecting fabrics for a single block, it's important to choose colors that contrast with each other or you'll lose the pinwheel's spin. Try sewing with tone-on-tone fabrics or choose prints that "read as" the color you're targeting when viewed from a distance.
