Cotter pins, also called split pins or cotter keys, are bent pins with a rounded head that are slid into a hole. Once inserted into the hole, the two ends are bent into different directions deforming the pin, so it cannot be easily removed from the hole. While cotter pins come in many shapes and sizes, the most common is the split pin variety. Cotter pins are used with castle nuts to lock the nut onto a bolt and prevent it from spinning loose accidentally.
SIC Industry Description
A split pin , also known in the United States as a cotter pin or cotter key , is a metal fastener with two tines that are bent during installation, similar to a staple or rivet. Typically made of thick wire with a half-circular cross section, split pins come in multiple sizes and types. The British definition of " cotter pin " is equivalent to U. To avoid confusion the term split cotter is sometimes used for a split pin. A further use of the term "cotter pin" is the "crank cotter pin" used to lock bicycle pedal cranks to the bottom bracket axle. These are not "split" at all and are wedge shaped.

In mechanics, the need to join pieces like plates, sections, and bars is very common. Any assembly, however simple it may be, requires the union of parts together, but the mechanical parts to be joined require the proper elements of marriage that are named fasteners. Most commonly, the fasteners used in mechanics are: rivets, pins, bolts, screws, nuts, washers, and braces. The union of parts made by the fasteners can be of two types: mobile or permanent. In the mobile type of union, the fasteners can be placed or removed from the set without causing any damage to parts that were attached. This is the case, for example, unions made with bolts, nuts and washers. The type of permanent union, the fasteners, when installed, can not be removed without becoming unusable. This is the case, for example, for unions made with rivets and welds.
