This little book is intended for the man who uses tobacco. While there is a very extensive literature concerning tobacco, yet it is surprising how few books there are written expressly for the smoker. Much has been written concerning culture, production and manufacture; the historical and anecdotal aspects have been catered for; pamphlets and books abusing and denouncing the use of tobacco are plentiful; but the smoker will find it difficult to get a book just giving him the facts concerning tobacco and smoking, which he ought to know, and omitting matters, which, although interesting, are not necessary. This little book is an attempt to fulfil that purpose; and it is felt that no apology is needed for its appearance. If the average user of tobacco is questioned concerning the matters treated in the following pages, he will be found ignorant of them.

Tobacco is a natural product that is marked by its diversity of flavours, which can vary from harvest to harvest. To achieve the flavour typical for a Landewyck brand, different tobaccos are mixed into a "blend". This ensures the consistent taste of a brand over years. The tobacco is introduced into the mixing box horizontally and taken out again vertically after several hours. This ensures an optimal mix of the various kinds of tobacco. The blend of raw tobacco for cigarettes is cut with a cutting width of 0.
The tobacco is then ready for further processing. The tobacco fibers are vacuumed from the interim storage container, shaped into an uniform strand which is then placed on a strip of paper with filter pieces. This creates a kind of endless cigarette, which is then cut into individual cigarettes. The burley tobacco plant can grow up to a height of 1. Burley tobacco requires heavier soils and more fertilizer than Virginia tobacco.
This gives it its characteristic brown colour and a cigar-like taste. The cigarettes containing burley tobacco produce a dark and intense smoke. Burley tobacco tastes dry and aromatic, similar to chocolate. Usually, sugars such molasses or liquorice are added to the Burley tobacco to replace the natural sugar. It is combined with other types of tobacco, such as Virginia and Turkish tobacco, to produce an American-blend cigarette.

T he production of any tobacco product begins on the farm. Tobacco is grown around the world, principally in warm, tropical climates with rich soils. In Europe, the principal tobacco farming regions are in Greece, Italy and Spain. Tobacco can be harvested in a range of different ways, but most stages of the process are now mechanised. After the leaves are harvested, they must be cured in preparation for consumption. This can also be done in a variety of ways, from sun-curing tobacco leaves left outdoors to hanging them in a barn to air-cure. Flue-curing involves blowing hot air into a closed barn, while fire-cured tobacco is hung in a barn by a smouldering fire.

Industrial manufacturing. Other humidifier applications. Tobacco leaves, cut tobacco and paper are all extremely hygroscopic which means that they give up their moisture to the surrounding environment if the air is too dry. Dry air causes tobacco's properties to degrade resulting in shrinkage, weight loss, brittleness, flaking, splitting and tearing.
Each is grown and cured for us by thousands of farmers around the world, sold in many different grades. We sample tobacco leaf continuously in our quest to achieve the consistent quality and taste our brands are known for. Tobacco blending is a skillful process that starts with buying and combining exactly the right mix of grades — getting that right is the only way to achieve the particular taste and quality our cigarette brands are known for. The use and quantity of flavorings may also vary according to regional preferences. Fine-cut tobacco packed in loose-form in pouches is known as rolling tobacco. Rolling tobacco was once considered a lower quality product. Our rolling tobacco brands include the popular Amber Leaf and Old Holborn brands. Old Holborn, one of the top brands in the UK and a market leader in Greece, is renowned for its distinctive Virginia tobacco taste. It takes its name from the London street on which its creator Richard Lloyd first began experimenting with tobacco in

The attention recently drawn to the subject has resulted in many inquiries for information useful to the planter desirous of starting a tobacco estate. But beyond scattered articles in newspapers and the proceedings of agricultural societies, there has been no practical literature available for the English reader. It is a little remarkable that while our neighbours have been writing extensively about tobacco growing, of late years, no English book devoted exclusively to this subject has been published for nearly thirty years. A glance at the bibliography given at the end of this volume will show that the French, German, Swiss, Italian, Dutch, Sicilian, and even Scandinavian planter has a reliable handbook to guide him in this important branch of agriculture, while British settlers in our numerous tobacco-growing colonies must glean their information as best they may from periodical literature. To supply the want thus indicated, the present volume vi has been prepared.

It is necessary to cure tobacco after harvesting and before it can be consumed. Curing tobacco has always been a process necessary to prepare the leaf for consumption because, in its raw, freshly picked state, the green tobacco leaf is too wet to ignite and be smoked. In recent times, traditional curing barns in the United States are falling into disuse, as the trend toward using prefabricated metal curing boxes has become more and more prevalent. Temporary curing boxes are often found on location at tobacco farms.
